The Niagara-on-the-Lake Courthouse opened in 1848 when the town was the county seat. However in 1865 the county decided to relocate all legal proceedings to the Courthouse in St. Catharines. This was a heavy blow ... the new courthouse laid empty, jobs were lost, shops closed and people moved away. Fortunately the county provided financial  compensation for the loss of the courthouse business and the town council decided to use these funds to build a world class hotel — The Royal Niagara which opened in 1869. It was recognized as one of the finest hotels in North America. Later the hotel changed its name to The Queen’s Royal Hotel.
